In the words of Mr Lester Brown, “We have not inherited this earth from our forefathers, we have borrowed it from our children”.But the current rate of Population explosion has left no stone unturned to exploit Earth’s resources.
This has led to the degradation of environment and depletion of our limited resources through uncontrolled growth of urbanization, industrialization, intensified agricultural activities, deforestation, soil degradation and land overuse, over exploitation of natural resources to meet energy requirements, waste production, global warming. Today, a mass of the world is suffering from shortage of food and water, unemployment and lack of opportunities to fulfil their three basic needs. This has created inequality in socio-economic development as well. Adding on, the demands placed by the industrial growth and technological advancements of developing nation on our global environment are threatening the future of sustainable life on Earth. There can be no doubt that this overgrowth is one of the strongest factors distorting the future of human society.
Therefore, need of the hour is to address these serious issues to ensure a sustainable existence for upcoming centuries. These are certain suggestions to control population growth:-
*Special efforts should be made for creating awareness amongst the general mass and local policy makers about its negative impact.
*Sustainable development approach focussing on economical growth as well as environmental conservation is another way to sustain natural environment for a long run.
*Easy and cheap availability of contraceptives.
*Implementing family planning effectively.
*Fertility falls as income rises, education spreads, and health improves.
*Development is the best contraceptive.
“There is a strong need to shift our views from the mechanistic one to a holistic and ecological view of the world”.
