As we approach, world population day on July 11 every year since the United Nations first observed it in 1989. We take a look at what the day is all about and how it came into being.
The day is significant because it highlights the problems of our population raises awareness about the effects of over population on the environment and development. Population issuesinclude things like family planning, human rights, right to health, the baby’s health, gender equality, child marriage, sex education.
As per reports it was estimated that, 7.8 billion people are living on earth as of March, 2020. Population is one of the leading concerns of countries like India and China as more population leads to increase use of resources constituting about 36% of the world’s population.
Theme for the year 2020, is based on safeguarding the health and rights of women and girls around the world.
If I connect population growth with covid-19 –The Pandemic – the number of population is expected to rise due to unplanned pregnancies. A latest research highlighted that there is major disruption to health services. The world in turn lead to 7 million unintended pregnancies. There is a huge rise in gender based violence, female genital mutilation, and sexual harassment.
On this world population day, let’s pledge to acknowledge and spread awareness of one of humanity’s biggest problems – population explosion, and ensure a healthy environment for our future generations.
